The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is celebrated annually on 9 August. This day highlights the rights of Indigenous Peoples to self-determination – preserving their culture, centering their own voices, and making decisions for the benefit of their communities past, present, and future.      This month's newsletter shares a look at some recent events that brought Indigenous librarians together with a wide range of IFLA sections to discuss some of the most pressing issues in the field. It features a good practice example of promoting Indigenous language from the National Library of Finland and debuts a brand-new edition of the IFLA Internet Manifesto!  Happy reading!  🌍 In the field IFLA WLIC 2025 in Kazakhstan The IFLA Governing Board has selected the city of Astana, Kazakhstan to host the 2025 World Library and Information Congress next August. This is the first ever edition of IFLA's flagship event to be held in Central Asia and reinforces IFLA's role in developing the international library field! Read more → IFLA attains charity status Earlier this month, IFLA was informed that it has been awarded charity status (ANBI status, Cultural ANBI) by the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. Attaining charity status will make it easier for IFLA to partner with other organisations, and contribute to our wider efforts to ensure financial sustainability. This forum was the result of hard work and collaboration between eight IFLA Committees and covered an incredible range of topics, including artificial intelligence, censorship, colonialism, LGBTQIA+ representation, knowledge stewardship and community trust building. The topics covered could not have been more timely and relevant, and the entire event was incredibly thought-provoking.  Read more → Introducing support for the Indigenous North Sámi language at the National Library of Finland  Better addressing linguistic and cultural diversity in national library infrastructures can have a wide impact on society. Our infrastructures and services cater to many users, both individuals and organizations, extending beyond the library and cultural heritage sector. Here, the National Library of Finland shares experiences from newly initiated support for the Indigenous North Sámi language in some of its core services.  Learn more → Unshelving Voices: Empowering libraries against censorship  From 6–7 August 2024, the "Unshelving Voices" symposium at UNAM in Mexico City brought together a diverse group from around the world to tackle the issue of censorship in libraries. Hosted by the MEXINFO and UNAM organisers, this event was a resounding success, thanks to the insightful contributions and active engagement of all involved.  "Unshelving Voices" was a collaboration of various IFLA groups including the FAIFE Advisory Committee, the LGBTQ+ Special Interest Group, the School Libraries Section, and the MLAS Section. Learn more → Launch of IFLA's Internet Manifesto 2024 After the open consultations and a review-approval process, our manifesto is finally here!  This document represents a unification of library voices in regard to the Internet, it provides our vision of the Internet we want, sets out a compelling narrative about the place of libraries in the digital space and provides a series of recommendations for different actors. We also see the manifesto as an opportunity to ensure that the library voice remains relevant and strong in the international discussions that are shaping the way forward in Internet Governance processes.  Read the article → DEADLINE EXTENDED for the new IFLA Preservation and Conservation Network Hub!
