New Report/ New Book
"A Comparative Study of India's Research Performance in Scientific and Technological Areas of Clean Energy and Water (2006-17): A Scientometric Analysis"
by Anup Kumar Das, B Sridevi, Saradindu Bhaduri (PIs); study sponsored by NSTMIS Division, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India; 2020. ISBN: 9788193685723. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.5521306.

New ISC Report "Unleashing Science: Delivering Missions for Sustainability"

Unleashing Science: Delivering Missions for Sustainability
by International Science Council, 2021. Paris, France. International Science Council. DOI: 10.24948/2021.04.

About this Report: We need to urgently redouble efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Business-as-usual approaches – to science and science funding – are no longer appropriate to this massively complex and urgent challenge. Effective action will require broad and bold engagement, and commitment, from science funders, but also from the decision makers and influencers in governments, in the private sector and in civil society. The international funding community is ready for the challenge and has requested the International Science Council to lead on the development of a process to convene the necessary voices, jointly designing the way forward This report is an input into that process It is intended as a strawman, to disrupt our thinking and to inspire ambitious and achievable outcomes. Let's begin.
  • Explore a roadmap of how science, along with science funders, policy-makers, civil society & the private sector can accelerate its impact towards achieving the SDGs by 2030.
  • ISC calls for redoubled efforts in critical science systems.
  • "We must collectively take a much more holistic approach that has intent, focus, energy and urgency. It is time to think and act differently in science."

About the Book:
What policies should India pursue for fostering innovation? Basant's book takes the perspective that all policies that influence technology-related choices of firms should be considered part of innovation policy. It analyses the impact various policies—including those related to industry, trade, R&D, foreign direct investment, intellectual property rights, start-ups and higher education—have on innovation. It brings together conceptual and empirical literature from diverse intellectual streams to study the linkages between innovation and public policy.

Combining insights from the disciplines of economics and management, the book highlights the complexity of policy choices, identifies certain focus areas and argues for consistency across various policy instruments to create an appropriate environment for innovation in India.

New Report "World Development Report 2021: Data for Better Lives" [WDR2021]

New Report
"World Development Report 2021: Data for Better Lives" (WDR2021)
published by the World Bank, 2021.

About the Report: Today's unprecedented growth of data and their ubiquity in our lives are signs that the data revolution is transforming the world. And yet much of the value of data remains untapped. Data collected for one purpose have the potential to generate economic and social value in applications far beyond those originally anticipated. But many barriers stand in the way, ranging from misaligned incentives and incompatible data systems to a fundamental lack of trust. World Development Report 2021: Data for Better Lives explores the tremendous potential of the changing data landscape to improve the lives of poor people, while also acknowledging its potential to open back doors that can harm individuals, businesses, and societies. To address this tension between the helpful and harmful potential of data, this Report calls for a new social contract that enables the use and reuse of data to create economic and social value, ensures equitable access to that value, and fosters trust that data will not be misused in harmful ways.

Join in the Science Summit at UNGA76 | Online 14-30 September 2021

Join in the Science Summit at UNGA76, a major contribution to advancing Science for the UN SDGs. Online from 14-30 Sept 2021.
ISC will organise the second edition of the UNGA76 Science Summit around the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA76) in New York in September 2021. The objective of the virtual meeting will be to raise awareness of the role and contribution of science to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It will demonstrate initiatives that provide models for global science mechanisms and activities in support of the SDGs, particularly in science infrastructure and capacity building. Science is and will enable sustainable economic, environmental, and societal development. Science is more than a funding prioritisation exercise: science is impacting all areas of policy-making and is playing a more critical role in how policy objectives are achieved and the consequent benefit to people everywhere, including responses to global challenges.
Engagement with policy leadership is more important than ever: UNGA76 is a unique forum for science to demonstrate how policy and political leadership can benefit from innovation. Central to this is the role of nonstate actors and the multilateral fora, which increasingly determine how priorities are set. Science needs to be part of this dialogue and inform outputs through thought leadership, evidence, insights, analysis, and innovation.

New Book "Transformative Pathways to Sustainability: Learning Across Disciplines, Cultures and Contexts"

Transformative Pathways to Sustainability: Learning Across Disciplines, Cultures and Contexts
by Pathways Network; Routledge, London, 2021, DOI: 10.4324/9780429331930, ISBN: 9780429331930.

Abstract: Transformations to sustainability are increasingly the focus of research and policy discussions around the Sustainable Development Goals. However, the different roles played transdisciplinary research in contributing to social transformations across diverse settings have been neglected in the literature. Transformative Pathways to Sustainability responds to this gap presenting a set of coherent, theoretically informed and methodologically innovative experiments from around the world that offer important insights for this growing field. The book draws on content and cases from across the 'Pathways' Transformative Knowledge Network, an international group of six regional hubs working on sustainability challenges in their own local or national contexts. Each of these hubs reports on their experiences of 'transformation laboratory' processes in the following areas: sustainable agricultural and food systems for healthy livelihoods, with a focus on sustainable agri-food systems in the UK and open-source seeds in Argentina; low carbon energy and industrial transformations, focusing on mobile-enabled solar home systems in Kenya and social aspects of the green transformation in China; and water and waste for sustainable cities, looking at Xochimilco wetland in Mexico and Gurgaon in India. The book combines new empirical data from these processes with a novel analysis that represents both theoretical and methodological contributions. It is especially international in its scope, drawing inputs from North and South, mirroring the universality of the Sustainable Development Goals. The book is of vital interest to academics, action researchers and funders, policy makers and civil-society organisations working on transformations to sustainability. The Open Access version of this book has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license. The publication is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Pravin Kushwaha, JNU-TRCSS.
