THE CULTURE AND EDUCATION ISSUE

Welcome to the February 2024 edition of the IFLA newsletter!

Let's start this month with a quote:

"Ensuring access to culture and the arts is inseparable from the existence of spaces dedicated to it that are open and allow for the participation of all, including… libraries."

This is among the statements made in UNESCO's new Framework on Culture and Arts Education, which have been endorsed this month by ministers from around the world.

Fittingly, the theme for this month's newsletter is culture and education. This month's newsletter will explore how libraries are working towards this vision. We invite you to revisit the Culture Greening Communities brief in light of this new framework.

Happy reading! 🏛️📖

Advisory Committee on Standards: 2023 Standards Procedure Manual

The creation and maintenance of IFLA standards is an important aspect of IFLA's contribution to the global library community. In looking at where IFLA should be in 2029 (IFLA Strategy Surveys, survey 4, IFLA in 2029) one of the top scoring scenarios was Go-To Standards: "IFLA standards are the go-to reference point for anyone looking to enhance library services." Another scenario is also particularly relevant to standards work: providing the framework for "harmonisation of library practices around the world to facilitate cooperation across borders."

The updated version of the IFLA Standards Procedure Manual is now published and available in the IFLA Repository and on the Creating and Revising Standards webpage.

Library and Information Science education in support of culture and arts education

Libraries and information services are essential for culture, arts, science, education, and other sectors, contributing to the sustainable development of individuals, organisations, communities and nations. Thus, libraries and cultural heritage institutions play a vital role in promoting and co-creating culture and arts education, supporting lifelong and life-wide learning, and providing spaces for intercultural dialogue.
