Fwd: UNESCO Chief Science Advisors Roundtable Invitation | 6 September, 1:30 PM IST

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are pleased to invite you to attend the Open Dialogue Session of the Chief Science Advisers' Roundtable (CSAR), jointly organised by UNESCO and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. This session will be held on Friday 6 September 2024, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Room XI at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

The CSAR was launched in 2023 during the Indian G20 presidency to provide a platform that brings together chief science advisers and their equivalents from across the globe to discuss contemporary and emerging global policy issues of common importance.

The Open Dialogue will gather chief science advisers, the UNESCO Permanent Delegations and the representatives of the relevant international scientific and science advisory bodies to discuss the impact of the science advice mechanisms in building trust in science and generate insights on building science advice capacity at the country, regional and international levels.
Please find attached the event programme, register before Tuesday 5 September to secure your spot.

For any queries, please feel free to contact my colleague Mr Christin Ametodou (c.ametodou@unesco.org) and myself (r.chitre@unesco.org).

Kind regards,
Ruhi

THE INDIGENOUS MATTERS ISSUE

Welcome to the August newsletter!

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is celebrated annually on 9 August. This day highlights the rights of Indigenous Peoples to self-determination – preserving their culture, centering their own voices, and making decisions for the benefit of their communities past, present, and future.

This month's newsletter shares a look at some recent events that brought Indigenous librarians together with a wide range of IFLA sections to discuss some of the most pressing issues in the field. It features a good practice example of promoting Indigenous language from the National Library of Finland and debuts a brand-new edition of the IFLA Internet Manifesto!

Happy reading!  🌍

The IFLA Governing Board has selected the city of Astana, Kazakhstan to host the 2025 World Library and Information Congress next August.

This is the first ever edition of IFLA's flagship event to be held in Central Asia and reinforces IFLA's role in developing the international library field!

IFLA attains charity status

Earlier this month, IFLA was informed that it has been awarded charity status (ANBI status, Cultural ANBI) by the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. Attaining charity status will make it easier for IFLA to partner with other organisations, and contribute to our wider efforts to ensure financial sustainability.

This achievement was made possible thanks to the decision of our Members to amend our Statutes during the General Assembly in June.

From 6–7 August 2024, the "Unshelving Voices" symposium at UNAM in Mexico City brought together a diverse group from around the world to tackle the issue of censorship in libraries.

Hosted by the MEXINFO and UNAM organisers, this event was a resounding success, thanks to the insightful contributions and active engagement of all involved.

"Unshelving Voices" was a collaboration of various IFLA groups including the FAIFE Advisory Committee, the LGBTQ+ Special Interest Group, the School Libraries Section, and the MLAS Section.
