THE SUSTAINABLE URBANISATION ISSUE |
|
Welcome to the October 2024 newsletter! This month's theme is close to our hearts - Sustainable urbanisation. What do libraries mean for the future of cities (and all sorts of human settlements)?
Looking back at the United Nations' Pact for the Future—adopted at last month's Summit of the Future—knowledge, science, technology and innovation, culture, and 'meaningful' connectivity are recognised as drivers of development. At a local level, in our cities, communities, and villages, libraries are the hub for connecting people to all the above. Libraries mean the future we want! Happy reading! 🏘️

|
Of course our biggest commitment in the last month was the IFLA Information Futures Summit, which brought together almost 800 colleagues from around the world for a common conversation about the future of knowledge and information. You can find plenty more about the work at the Summit and the major reports launched there further down in this newsletter!
In addition to the Summit itself, IFLA President Vicki McDonald also held a number of meetings with visiting delegations, and hosted a joint informal meeting of members of IFLA's Governing Board, and Professional and Regional Councils, as well as chairs of Advisory Committees and members of the Australian advisory committee for the Summit. She also joined the meeting of the Asia-Oceania Regional Division Committee, and the emerging leaders' trends workshop. She also shared messages with the conferences of the Korean Library Association and the Library and Information Association of South Africa.
IFLA Secretary General Sharon Memis joined Vicki in the Brisbane events above, and is participating in a CILIP event at the UK Parliament, focusing on how libraries change lives. |

Supercharged by AI: A new creative intervention about the effects of AI on our online lives |

This new creative intervention is produced by Tactical Tech and DensityDesign Lab at Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with IFLA. From chatbots to deepfakes, AI-generated content is becoming increasingly common online. New AI tools make it easier, faster and cheaper to generate text, images, videos, and more. In turn, the harms that have always existed online—scams, harassment, polarisation, and bias—are now being "Supercharged" by AI. |
