"The Unseen Game: Infrastructure, Labour and the City"
15.12.2022, Thursday, at 6.00 pm IST

In a news conference before the inauguration of the FIFA World Cup 2022, FIFA President Gianni Infantino accused Western media of bias and Western nations of hypocrisy, for their highlighting of inhuman treatment of migrant workers in Qatar and allegations of human rights violation, including the criminalisation of LGBTQ persons.
The Guardian reported that 6500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal have died in Qatar since the beginning of its World Cup preparations, in 2010. That is "an average of 12 migrant workers from these five south Asian nations have died each week".  Segments of the South Asian economy depend heavily on remittances sent by migrant workers in the Middle East, however, the media in South Asia has failed to focus adequately on these deaths. Despite having never qualified to the FIFA World Cup, the South Asian nations participate enthusiastically in watching and discussing these matches, newspapers and prime-time television news carry information related to football in great detail. The death of the migrant workers who have been instrumental in creating the spectacle of the most expensive World Cup till date has not marred the sports coverage.
"The Unseen Game: Infrastructure, Labour and the City" is a roundtable discussion organised by the South Asia Network for Communication, Displacement and Migration (SAN-CDM), highlighting the precarious existence of migrant workers, their contribution to the making of infrastructure and logistics in the modern metropolis (or should we say necropolis), the condition of South Asian migrant workers in the Gulf countries, as well as the role and responsibilities of the media.

Symposium on Computational Gastronomy: The Emerging Data Science of Food, Flavors, Nutrition & Health | 21 Dec, IIIT Delhi

One Day Symposium on Computational Gastronomy: The Emerging Data Science of Food, Flavors, Nutrition & Health #GastroSym2022
21st December 2022, Wednesday, Time: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
Venue: Research and Development Block, IIIT Delhi, India
Cooking forms the core of our cultural identity other than being the basis of nutrition and health. The increasing availability of culinary data and the advent of computational methods for their scrutiny are dramatically changing the artistic outlook towards gastronomy. The application of data-driven strategies for investigating gastronomic data has opened up exciting avenues giving rise to an all-new field of 'Computational Gastronomy'. This emerging interdisciplinary science asks questions of culinary origin to seek their answers via the compilation of culinary data and their analysis using methods of statistics, computer science, and artificial intelligence. These endeavors have the potential to transform the food landscape by effectively leveraging data-driven food innovations for better health, nutrition, and a sustainable future.
The 'Complex Systems Laboratory' at IIIT-Delhi (Prof. Ganesh Bagler) has been on the forefront of this emerging data science and has contributed to its foundation via pioneering studies in food pairing, culinary fingerprints, and health impacts of food, other than creating structured data repositories of recipes from across the world (RecipeDB), flavor molecules (FlavorDB), food-disease associations (DietRx, SpiceRx) and applications for novel recipes generation (Ratatouille).
The 'Symposium on Computational Gastronomy' is aimed at providing an exposition of this emerging interdisciplinary science involving data collection and curation, data analytics, machine learning, natural language processing, and pattern mining. 'Computational Gastronomy' has the potential to transform the landscape of food and can be effectively leveraged for better health and nutrition through an array of culinary applications (recipe design, food-beverage pairing, novel recipe generation, disease-specific culinary recommendation, dietary interventions, flavor combinations, taste prediction, etc.) apart from providing valuable insights into the principles of culinary sciences. Such advances are expected to set new trends in various allied sectors including food, health, hospitality, and tourism.

Who should attend: Chefs; Students and professionals from culinary domains; Researchers and other industry professionals interested in applications of computational gastronomy; Computer scientists and data science enthusiasts.
Registration fee: Participants are required to make an online payment of INR 1000 (Non-Refundable) for attending this symposium using the link.
Registration fees include: Participation Certificate, Lunch; Tea/ Coffee break
Note: Accommodation and Travel allowances are NOT covered in the registration fees.
Deadlines: Last date for online registration and fee payment is 18th December 2022, Sunday.

Molecular Biology Workshop for Underrepresented Groups in Academia | Pune, 25-31 January 2023

Molecular Biology Workshop for Underrepresented Groups in Academia

Dates: 25-31 Jan-2023

Location: IISER Pune Campus

Backdrop: Molecular Biology Techniques are essential for all students who aspire for a career in biological research in Industry or Academia. Unfortunately, there are several students, particularly from underprivileged groups, who lack exposure to these techniques. Such students are at a considerable disadvantage when they join a PhD program or industrial research-related jobs. The lack of such exposure often implies that many students do not even consider research as a career option, which is perhaps a major loss to the intellectual capital of the country. To address this issue, IISER Pune has been organizing paid, hands-on molecular biology workshops for school and college students since 2019. Now, with the help of a SERB-Karyashala grant from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, we bring our workshop to the marginalized sections of Indian society.

Application / Registration fees: None.
Number of Participants: 25
Type: Offline hands-on molecular biology workshop. Fully residential.
Travel expenses: Reimbursed to the selected candidates.
Accommodation: Selected candidates will be provided lodging and boarding in IISER guest house.
Certificates: All participants will get a certificate on successful completion of the workshop. 100% attendance is mandatory for travel claims and certificates.
Industrial Sponsors: KK Nag Pvt. Ltd and Eppendorf India Pvt Ltd.

Who can apply
To apply, students must meet all of the following three criteria:
  • Currently enrolled in a post graduate course (MSc or IV-V year of an Integrated Masters Program / BTech / MBBS) in Life Sciences or first two years of PhD in any branch of life-sciences
  • Belong to any of the five categories: SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Women.
  • Enrolled in an institute from a non-metro (i.e., Category Y and Z) city. This essentially means that students studying in institutes located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune CANNOT apply.

Important dates
  • Registration opens: 2-Dec-2022
  • Application deadline: 20-Dec-2022
