Abstract

As part of an ongoing collaboration that UNU-MERIT is participating in, we are glad to invite you to the launch of the Steering Research and Innovation for Global Goals (STRINGS) Report. The STRINGS report is a global study analysing whether the directions being taken by the world's science and technology are adequately aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It shows the glaring mismatch between science, technology and innovation (STI) and the SDGs; warns that if this is not addressed it will undermine progress on the SDGs; and makes recommendations about how this imbalance can be tackled. At the launch event we will build on the STRINGS report's key findings to engage in productive discussions on how to address the misalignments between STI and the SDGs, empower effective policy actions and inform key stakeholders about more inclusive, plural and diverse STI choices in meeting the SDGs by 2030.

ICTP Workshop on Ethical and Societal Challenges of Machine Learning | 7-11 November

Ethical and Societal Challenges of Machine Learning
7-11 November 2022
An ICTP Virtual Meeting, Trieste, Italy
Deadline: 27 October 2022

From helping farmers adapt to climate change to predicting disease outbreaks, scientists in developing countries have begun turning to ML for more effective solutions. With this potential, however, comes the possibility for abuse, misuse, and unintended consequences.
Topics
  • Embedding Ethics Education in Machine Learning: case studies from various parts of the world that demonstrate the need for a wider perspective on ML ethical challenges.
  • Big data, privacy and democracy: ethical questions linked with big data exploitation, privacy and the dangers for democracy.
  • Machine Learning, bias and fairness: problems of ML amplified bias, and some of the possible solutions.
  • Diversity in ML: causes and impact of this lack of diversity, and some of the success stories that demonstrate how diverse teams are more successful.
  • Impact of new technologies: impacts of novel technologies like TinyML and global satellite-enabled internet services, especially on people in least developed countries.
