Summer School on "Open Science": Ambivalences and Tensions - New Borderlands between Science, Technology and Society

Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain | 27-31 July 2020

The Miguel Sánchez-Mazas Chair (University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU), the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS, KIT Karlsruhe) and the Human Technology Centre (HumTec, RWTH Aachen) will be hosting an International Summer School for PhD students, titled 'Open Science': Ambivalences and Tensions - New Borderlands between science, technology and society (Organizers: Stefan Böschen, RWTH/HumTec; Paulina Dobroc, ITAS/KIT; Andoni Ibarra, UPV/EHU; Andreas Lösch, ITAS/KIT; and Hannot Rodríguez, UPV/EHU). The Summer School offers PhD students the opportunity to develop their projects in a stimulating working atmosphere and in an international context. We aim to provide an inspirational environment for learning and discussion that ensures excellent feedback on everyone's work, in formats such as "Lecture", "Individual Presentation", "Workshop" and "Poster Presentation" (Keynote lecturers: Steve Fuller, Christopher M. Kelty and team, Philip Mirowski).

The Summer School is open to PhD students at any stage of the progress in their dissertation project. Please apply by March 15th, 2020 at the latest by sending your suggestions to Lilia Bolz (lilia.bolz@humtec.rwth‐aachen.de). Rules and Regulations for Checking Similarity Index (Plagiarism)

The term papers for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students will be checked by URKUND software provided by INFLIBNET, as long as the facility is available to the library.
Turnitin software will be used for generating similarity report/originality for content in English and other European languages.
The Central library will only entertain the drafts of M.Phil and PhD dissertations and theses for checking originality(Plagiarism).
The library will check the drafts of theses and dissertations twice only.
As per the UGC regulations, the Similarity Index (SI) of the dissertation and theses should be 10% or less, so in case the SI is 10% or less the same will not be re-checked by the library.

RRI Beyond Its Comfort Zone: Initiating a Dialogue with Frugal Innovation by 'the Vulnerable'

Abstract: Responsible research and innovation (RRI) aims at mitigating the negative unintended consequences of technologies, developed by large business organisations, on society and environment. Scholars point out that the broader ethical underpinnings of RRI in terms of 'transparency, interaction and mutual responsiveness' are difficult to achieve in a typical business environment as conforming to these principles may erode the very competitive advantages the corporations seek to achieve through innovations. At the same time, the scholarship on frugal innovations by 'the vulnerable' puts forward an alternative narrative of innovations. Seeking to respond to the gap created by the apparatus of the mainstream market, and the State, these innovations reflect many pro-social motivations, and desire for inclusive development. The two discourses, however, remain isolated from each other. Our article is an attempt to initiate a dialogue between them. We intend to widen the scope and ambit of both RRI and the frugal innovation scholarships, which might help garner more policy and social support in favour of developing socially relevant, inclusive and context-specific innovations.

Objectives of the Conference

To discuss, understand, develop and implement emerging ICT tools and techniques for information management, bridging the digital divide for social empowerment.
To discuss, adapt and develop interactive applications using next generation web technologies for social networking and knowledge creation and sharing.
To discuss and understand, plan, initiate and implement Knowledge Management practices and strategies in different types of organization for knowledge sharing.
To design, develop and implement interactive user interfaces and applications using new web tools and services for collaborative information services.
To promote ICT, Information Literacy, HR skills and to empower students, professionals and communities to meet the challenges in the changing environment in the ICT era.
To bring the technologists, academics, intermediates and the end users together to discuss and implement innovative technologies for collaborative global partnership and networking among institutions.

Submission of Papers
Authors are requested to submit abstract(s) on the main and sub themes of the conference. The abstract should be 250-300 words with minimum of 5 keywords. Accepted abstracts will be intimated to the author by e-mail. Authors are requested to submit two copies of full paper in IEEE format (double column - per sheet) on A4 size paper (Times Roman 12 points) in camera-ready form and also a softcopy on CD in MS-Word along with the Registration fee. Charts, graphs, photographs, if any, should be inserted at the proper place in the paper. The full paper should not exceed 8 pages of A4 size paper. Papers without registration fee will not be accepted. Papers accepted for presentation will be intimated to the corresponding author by e-mail. The decision of the Review Committee regarding the acceptance of the paper will be final. An author should not submit more than two papers. Selected papers will be published in UGC-CARE listed Journal.
